COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured pathway combining scientific knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and professional experience over four years. The foundation year introduces essential scientific and numeracy skills, practical science techniques, research and science communication, introductory biology and chemistry, and digital literacy, preparing students for advanced study. In Year 1, students develop core expertise in practical forensic science, processes and practices, analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology and genetics, and scientific support, while international and EU students can enhance academic language skills. Year 2 focuses on applied forensic skills, including research methods, trace analysis, body fluids and blood pattern analysis, drugs and toxicology, specialist applications in criminal investigation, and DNA profiling, equipping students to handle complex forensic tasks. Year 3 offers optional opportunities for a study abroad experience or an industrial placement, giving students valuable exposure to international or professional forensic environments. In Year 4, students consolidate their learning through a forensic science research project and modules in complex casework, advanced forensic investigation, and contemporary issues, with optional study in advanced analytical chemistry, forensic biology, and languages. Across all four years, the program emphasizes practical laboratory experience, research skills, and critical problem-solving, preparing graduates for professional careers in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related scientific fields.
