COURSE CURRICULUM

The Football Coaching and Performance (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies needed for a career in football coaching and performance. The foundation year introduces students to essential study skills, sports innovations, exercise and performance, contemporary issues in sport, community engagement, and a foundation project, providing a broad understanding of key principles across sport disciplines. Year 1 builds on this foundation with modules in academic and professional skills, sports coaching, football science, football accreditation preparation, research methods, and social issues in sport, while international and EU students can develop academic language skills. Year 2 focuses on advancing applied and theoretical expertise, covering research design and analysis, professional development and practice, coaching skills and pedagogy, football organisational leadership, and football science assessment and analysis, preparing students for real-world coaching and performance evaluation. Year 3 offers optional opportunities for a study abroad experience or a work placement, giving students valuable exposure to international or professional sporting environments. In Year 4, students consolidate learning through a major undergraduate project, talent identification and high-performance sport, advanced coaching practice, application of football science, and enhancing coaching craft. Across all years, the program integrates academic study, applied coaching, and elite football insights, equipping graduates for roles in football coaching, performance analysis, talent development, and sports management.
