COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Criminology (Extended Degree) at Northumbria University provides students with a detailed understanding of crime, victimisation, and societal responses, combining theoretical study with practical research and work experience. The foundation year introduces key concepts in crime and society, sociological imagination, politics and decision-making, social science debates, academic skills, and experiential learning, establishing a strong base for higher-level study. In the first year, students explore core criminology subjects including explaining crime, victims and victimisation, crime myths versus realities, identity and diversity, and the criminal justice system, supported by practical research through Real World Research 1, with academic language support available for international and EU students. The second year deepens knowledge with modules on criminology theories, contemporary criminality, and the criminal justice system, alongside applied research in Real World Research 2. Optional modules such as youth crime, drugs and society, sex work, and crime and media allow students to specialise according to their interests, and study abroad options enhance global understanding. In the final year, students can engage in work placements or study abroad, and explore advanced topics including contemporary policing, crimes of the powerful, mental health and offending, crime and technology, extreme violence, social harm, and intimate partner violence, alongside optional dissertations. The program equips graduates with analytical, research, and professional skills for careers in criminal justice, social policy, and related fields.
