COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Sociology (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) is a multi-year program designed to provide a thorough understanding of society, crime, and social research. The Foundation Year introduces students to core concepts such as crime and society, sociological imagination, politics, and key social debates, while developing academic skills and research techniques. Year 1 builds on this foundation, exploring explanations of crime, the criminal justice system, social problems, and sociological thinking, alongside practical research experience. Year 2 expands knowledge through core and optional modules, covering contemporary issues in criminality, youth and deviance, drugs, media, gender, family, activism, and applied research, with opportunities for study abroad. Year 3 offers further practical experience with optional work placement or study abroad, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts and gain global perspectives. Year 4 focuses on advanced and specialized topics, including contemporary policing, mentally disordered offenders, social harm, crime and technology, gender-based violence, migration, wellbeing, and radical sociological ideas. Students can also undertake dissertations or work experience projects to consolidate research and analytical skills. Across all four years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, and the ability to connect individual actions to wider social structures, preparing graduates for careers in criminology, social research, policy, and related professional fields while fostering informed engagement with contemporary social issues.
