COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to develop students’ technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and professional competence in computing. The foundation year introduces essential skills in digital technologies, information systems, coding, physical computing, and academic and personal development, providing a strong base for advanced study. In the first year, students build on this foundation with modules in AI fundamentals, computational thinking, computing fundamentals, data fundamentals, programming, and computers and society, with academic language support available for international and EU students. The second year advances technical knowledge through core modules in advanced programming, algorithms and data structures, and human-computer interaction, alongside a wide range of optional modules such as software architecture, computer vision, data visualization, digital forensics, mobile and web app development, and consultancy projects, allowing students to tailor their learning to their interests and career goals. The third year offers the option of a work placement or study abroad year, providing practical experience and international exposure. The final year focuses on advanced topics including data security and governance, computing group and individual projects, machine learning, cloud computing, big data, business intelligence, robotics, and contemporary software development methods. Across all years, the program integrates theory with practical application, preparing graduates for careers in software development, data science, cybersecurity, AI, and other technology-driven industries.
