COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry BSc (Hons) with an extended degree at Northumbria University is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of chemistry while developing practical, analytical, and research skills. The foundation year equips students with essential scientific and numeracy skills, practical laboratory techniques, research and communication abilities, and a grounding in biology, chemistry, and digital literacy to prepare them for undergraduate study. In the first year, students study analytical chemistry, chemical structures, physical chemistry, and biological and medicinal chemistry, alongside academic and professional skills, ensuring a strong foundation in both theory and practical application. The second year builds on this knowledge with in-depth study of organic, physical, and inorganic chemistry, analytical methods, chemical information science, and applied chemistry, preparing students for more advanced and specialized topics. In the third year, students have the option to gain international experience through a study abroad program or professional experience via an industrial placement year, enhancing their employability and real-world understanding. The final year focuses on advanced topics such as organic and inorganic chemistry, physical and polymer chemistry, and includes optional modules in natural product and medicinal chemistry, advanced instrumental methods, and theoretical and computational chemistry. The degree culminates in a substantial chemistry research project, allowing students to apply their knowledge and develop independent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in research, industry, or further academic study.
