COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Surveying (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program is designed to develop students’ technical, legal, and professional skills across a structured progression from foundation to advanced study. The foundation year introduces core topics including the context of the built environment, building pathology, building use, architectural design and technology, quantity surveying, and construction management, providing a solid base for further study. In Year 1, students expand their knowledge through modules on the evolution of the built environment, construction economics, construction technology, law for surveyors, property surveying, and professional practice, with academic language support offered for international and EU students. Year 2 focuses on more advanced areas such as design and specification, sustainable building technologies, planning and building legislation, contract administration, building performance and pathology, and business and professional development, further strengthening professional competence. Years 3 and 4 offer optional work placement or study abroad opportunities to gain practical experience and global exposure. The final year emphasizes advanced skills through modules including the building advice centre, design and construction economics, heritage and conservation, advanced building appraisal, and a substantial surveying dissertation. The program provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and professional development, equipping students to pursue a successful career as a Chartered Building Surveyor.
