COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program is structured over four years to provide a comprehensive understanding of biological sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with practical and research skills. The foundation year introduces key concepts in biology, chemistry, scientific communication, and digital literacy, while developing essential laboratory and numeracy skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in areas such as cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and plant and animal biology, alongside practical training. Year 2 advances this knowledge with core topics like biology of disease, molecular biology, and human metabolism, while offering a range of optional modules such as environmental biology, neuroscience, biotechnology, and bioinformatics, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. In Year 3, students have the opportunity to undertake a study abroad or industrial placement year, gaining valuable international or professional experience that enhances employability. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including molecular cell interactions, analytical techniques, and the societal impact of science, while completing a major research project. Optional modules provide further specialisation, preparing graduates for careers in biosciences, healthcare, or further academic study.
