COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program is structured over four years to develop strong scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills. The foundation year introduces key concepts in biology, chemistry, scientific communication, and digital literacy, while building essential numeracy and experimental skills. In Year 1, students expand their understanding through modules in analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology, genetics, and biological and medicinal chemistry, alongside developing practical and professional skills for laboratory work. Year 2 advances this knowledge with more specialised topics such as molecular biology, human metabolism, bioinformatics, organic chemistry, and analytical methods, helping students strengthen their research and analytical abilities. In Year 3, students have the opportunity to undertake a study abroad or industrial placement year, gaining valuable international exposure or real-world industry experience that enhances employability. In the final year, students focus on advanced areas of biochemistry, including natural product and medicinal chemistry, advanced analytical techniques, and current topics in the field, while also having the option to study genomics or industrial biochemistry. A major research project forms a key component, allowing students to apply their learning to practical scientific investigations. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in science, healthcare, and research.
