COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport, Exercise and Nutrition (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program that combines scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional development to prepare students for careers in sport, exercise, and nutrition. The foundation year develops essential academic and practical skills, exploring innovations in sport, exercise and performance, contemporary issues, and community engagement, alongside a foundation project. In the first year, students build core expertise in psychology, anatomy, biomechanics, human physiology, energetics of exercise, research methods, and academic and professional skills, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year focuses on applied and strategic skills through modules in research design, sport and health assessment, applied nutrition, professional development, and contemporary issues, with optional modules in performance analysis, strength and conditioning, physical activity, business, marketing, analytics, and study abroad opportunities. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a major undergraduate project and core modules in contemporary sport and exercise nutrition, while choosing optional modules in areas such as exercise and health interventions, human movement science, paediatric exercise, training physiology, psychological skills, injury and rehabilitation, talent identification, sport event management, coaching, global sport business, professional development, and behaviour change. The program integrates practical laboratory work, independent research, and interdisciplinary study, equipping graduates with the knowledge and experience to succeed in diverse roles in sport, exercise, and health.
