COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Coaching BSc (Hons) extended degree at Northumbria University is designed to develop students into skilled, knowledgeable, and professional coaches capable of working with athletes of all ages and abilities. The program begins with a foundation year, where students build essential skills for studying sport, explore contemporary issues in sport, engage with sport organisations, and complete a foundation project. In the first year, students develop academic and professional skills, learn the principles of research, and study core areas of sports coaching, including long-term athlete development, child development, coaching science, and the social aspects of sport participation. The second year deepens knowledge in coaching practice, leadership, and performance analysis while offering optional modules in nutrition, strength and conditioning, school sport, sport marketing, analytics, and study abroad opportunities to gain international experience. Students also focus on professional development, applied coaching skills, and sport organisation behaviour. The final year integrates advanced coaching practice and the enhancement of coaching craft alongside a major undergraduate project, allowing students to apply their learning in practical and research contexts. Optional modules cover areas such as paediatric sport science, sports medicine, talent identification, high-performance sport, event management, global sport business, and exercise and behaviour change. The program equips graduates with the theoretical understanding, practical expertise, and professional skills necessary for careers in coaching, sport education, performance development, and sport leadership roles.
