COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science extended degree at Northumbria University offers a comprehensive pathway for students to develop practical and theoretical expertise in sport, exercise, and health. The foundation year introduces essential skills, sport innovations, performance principles, and community engagement, preparing students for advanced study. In year one, students build knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, energetics, and research, alongside professional and academic skills, establishing a strong scientific base. The second year focuses on sport performance assessment, exercise and health evaluation, research design, and professional development, with optional modules in performance analysis, nutrition, strength and conditioning, digital marketing, analytics, and contemporary issues in education and school sport, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Opportunities for study abroad further enhance practical experience and global understanding. In the final year, students undertake a substantial research project while developing expertise in exercise and health interventions, human movement, paediatric sport, performance training, psychological skills, injury and rehabilitation, talent identification, sport management, coaching, and behaviour change. The program combines scientific rigour with applied practice and professional development, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experience to pursue careers in sport performance, coaching, health and fitness, research, and related sectors, while also preparing them for further postgraduate study.
