COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Geography (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) curriculum at Northumbria University is structured to build knowledge and skills progressively from foundation level to advanced study. The foundation year introduces key environmental topics such as sustainable development, earth system sciences, and environmental geography, alongside essential academic and fieldwork skills. In the first year, students develop a core understanding of physical environments, global and local environmental challenges, and earth system science, supported by practical fieldwork and training in measuring and mapping environmental systems. Academic and personal development skills are also strengthened. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialised areas including applied geosciences, earth observation, and GIS, along with research methods in physical geography. Students can choose optional modules such as ecology, water resources, past environments, and glacial studies, while continuing to develop fieldwork expertise. The final year emphasises independent research through a dissertation and offers a range of optional modules such as advanced geospatial applications, environmental data analysis, conservation management, and environmental policy. Throughout the course, students enhance their analytical, technical, and research skills, preparing them for careers in environmental science, geospatial analysis, and related fields.
