COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a structured program that develops students from foundational knowledge to advanced perioperative practice. The foundation year introduces essential skills such as professional development, study skills, self-awareness, human development, and collaborative working, preparing students for degree-level study. In the first year, students gain core knowledge of operating department practice, including anatomy and physiology, perioperative practice, and evidence-based approaches, alongside developing an understanding of patient care during surgical procedures. Academic language support is available for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in applied operating department practice, pathophysiology, and evidence-informed care, while enhancing clinical and practical skills required in perioperative settings. Students continue to develop competence in supporting patients safely across different stages of surgery. Academic language support continues where needed. In the final year, students focus on advanced operating department practice, integrating evidence into clinical development, leadership and management, and advanced perioperative skills, preparing them for professional roles within surgical teams. Throughout the program, students combine theoretical learning with practical experience, developing critical thinking, technical ability, and professional confidence. Graduates are equipped to work effectively in perioperative environments, delivering safe, high-quality care and contributing to multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
