COURSE CURRICULUM

The Occupational Therapy (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a structured program that develops students from foundational knowledge to professional competence in occupational therapy. The foundation year introduces key skills such as professional development, study skills, self-awareness, human development, and collaborative working, preparing students for degree-level study. In the first year, students are introduced to the role of an occupational therapist, exploring occupational science, occupational disruption, and occupations across the lifespan, alongside their first practice placement and academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this knowledge with further practical experience through a second placement, while focusing on public health, research and evidence-based practice, innovation, and the development of occupational therapy practice skills. Academic language support continues where needed. In the final year, students deepen their understanding through community-focused practice, a third placement, and modules on professional development and lifelong learning, culminating in an occupational therapy dissertation that demonstrates their research and analytical abilities. Throughout the course, students integrate theoretical learning with hands-on experience, gaining the skills required to support individuals in improving their daily lives. Graduates are prepared to work effectively in diverse health, social care, and community settings with strong professional and practical capabilities.
