COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Mental Health) Extended Degree BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured pathway from foundational learning to advanced professional practice in mental health nursing. The foundation year introduces essential skills such as professional development, study skills, self-awareness, human development, practical skills, and collaborative working, creating a strong base for future study. In the first year, students develop core knowledge in evidence-based practice, applied life and social sciences, and professional care, while building nursing skills in assessment, communication, and clinical interventions, with academic language support available for international and EU students. The second year focuses on psychosocial approaches, complex mental health care, and shared decision-making, alongside enhancing evidence-based practice and advanced clinical skills to prepare students for more challenging care situations. Academic language support continues where needed. In the third year, students transition into accountable practitioners, emphasizing leadership, teamwork, quality improvement, and advanced nursing skills aimed at improving patient safety and care quality. Throughout the program, students integrate theoretical learning with practical experience through clinical placements, developing critical thinking, professional judgment, and reflective practice. Graduates are equipped to provide safe, compassionate, and effective mental health care, meet professional standards, and contribute meaningfully to multidisciplinary healthcare teams in diverse clinical environments.
