COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Child) Extended Degree BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a structured pathway from foundational learning to advanced professional practice in child and young people’s nursing. The foundation year equips students with essential skills for personal and professional development, including becoming a professional, study skills, valuing self and others, human development, professional practice skills, and collaborative working, establishing a strong base for higher-level study. In the first year, students focus on core aspects of children and young people’s health and illness, applied life and social sciences, and professional practice, alongside developing nursing skills in assessment, communication, and interventions, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation, covering psychosocial approaches, complex care perspectives, shared decision-making, and evidence-based and advanced clinical skills, enabling students to manage increasingly challenging care situations. Academic language support continues for international and EU students. The third year prepares students to transition into accountable practitioners, emphasizing leadership, quality improvement, teamwork, and advanced nursing skills to enhance safety and care quality. Throughout the program, students combine theoretical study with practical experiences, fostering critical thinking, professional competence, and reflective practice. Graduates are equipped to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective care to children and young people while contributing meaningfully to healthcare teams and complex clinical environments.
