COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Adult) Extended Degree BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured pathway from foundational knowledge to advanced professional practice. The foundation year introduces students to the essentials of professional development, study skills, self-awareness, human development, practical skills, and collaborative working, creating a strong base for subsequent study. In the first year, students build on this foundation with modules focused on evidence-based practice, applied life and social sciences, and professional practice, alongside nursing skills development in assessment, communication, and interventions, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year emphasizes person-centred care, complex care, shared decision-making, and the application of evidence-based nursing skills, alongside the development of clinical competencies for managing more challenging care situations. Academic language support continues for international and EU students. In the third year, students focus on transitioning into accountable practitioners, leadership, quality improvement, and teamwork, while advancing their clinical skills to lead and enhance patient safety and care quality. Throughout the program, students gain both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience, supported by innovative teaching and digital learning tools, enabling them to develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and professional skills. Graduates are prepared to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care within adult nursing practice while demonstrating leadership and accountability in complex healthcare environments.
