COURSE CURRICULUM

The Networks and Cyber Security (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured progression from foundational knowledge to advanced skills in computing and cybersecurity. The foundation year introduces students to personal, academic, and technical skills, digital technologies, information systems, basic programming, digital society, and physical computing, establishing a solid base for higher-level study. In the first year, students develop computational thinking, programming abilities, computing fundamentals, data understanding, networks and cybersecurity basics, and explore the social and ethical implications of computing, with additional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation, offering core modules in human factors in cybersecurity, network switching and routing, and operating systems, while providing a wide range of optional modules such as software architecture, computer vision, digital forensics, mobile and web app development, IT service management, and professional practice projects, allowing students to tailor their learning to career goals. The final year emphasizes advanced study and practical application, including modules in advanced security, enterprise networks and security, data security and governance, as well as individual and group computing projects that consolidate learning and demonstrate professional competence. The program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, preparing graduates for careers in network administration, cybersecurity, software development, and related fields, equipping them with the technical and professional skills demanded by the evolving digital landscape.
