COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to provide a strong foundation in physical geography and environmental science, combining theoretical knowledge, fieldwork, and research skills. The foundation year introduces key topics such as environmental geography, sustainable development, earth system sciences, and post-industrial landscapes, while developing essential fieldwork and communication skills. In Year 1, students build a broad understanding of both human and physical geography, studying modules in physical environments, earth system science, geographical data, fieldwork, and academic and personal development, with additional academic language support available for international and EU students. Year 2 focuses more on physical geography and environmental processes, with core modules in earth observation and GIS, field applications, state of the planet, and research in physical geography, alongside optional topics such as water resources, past environments, and climate-related studies. This stage emphasizes data analysis, environmental monitoring, and applied fieldwork. In Year 3, students complete a geography and environment dissertation while selecting from a wide range of optional modules including environmental data analysis, coasts and oceans, environmental public health, policy and decision-making, and advanced geospatial applications. The course develops analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in environmental management, sustainability, research, and policy-making.
