COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to provide a comprehensive pathway combining scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence across four years of study. The foundation year equips students with essential skills in science and numeracy, practical laboratory techniques, research and science communication, introductory biology and chemistry, and digital literacy, establishing a strong base for higher-level study. In Year 1, students develop core expertise in practical forensic science, processes and practices in forensic investigation, analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology and genetics, and scientific support, while international and EU students can enhance academic language skills. Year 2 focuses on applied forensic techniques and investigative skills, including research methods, trace analysis, body fluids and blood pattern analysis, drugs and toxicology, DNA profiling, and specialist applications in criminal investigation, preparing students for complex real-world casework. Year 3 consolidates learning with a major forensic science research project and modules in complex casework, advanced forensic investigation, and contemporary issues, with optional studies in advanced analytical chemistry, forensic biology, and languages. Across all years, the course emphasizes practical laboratory experience, critical problem-solving, and analytical thinking, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to pursue professional roles in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related scientific fields.
