COURSE CURRICULUM

The Football Coaching and Performance (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to develop the practical, theoretical, and professional skills needed for a career in football coaching and performance. The foundation year provides an introduction to key concepts in sport, covering essential study skills, sports innovations, exercise and performance, contemporary issues in sport, community engagement, and a foundation project to build understanding across sport disciplines. Year 1 focuses on developing academic and professional skills, introducing students to research methods, sports coaching, football science, football accreditation preparation, and exploring social issues in sport, while international and EU students can enhance academic language skills. Year 2 builds on these foundations through modules in research design and analysis, professional development and practice, coaching skills, sport coaching pedagogy, football organisational leadership, and football science assessment and analysis, preparing students for applied coaching and performance evaluation. Year 3 consolidates learning with a major undergraduate project, talent identification, high-performance sport, advanced coaching practice, application of football science, and enhancing coaching craft, giving students the opportunity to apply theory in practical, high-level contexts. Across all three years, the program combines academic study, applied coaching experience, and exposure to elite football environments, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional competence to succeed in football coaching, performance analysis, and sports development roles.
