COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria provides a comprehensive, multi-year curriculum that combines scientific knowledge with practical skills. The foundation year introduces core topics such as environmental geography, post-industrial landscapes, sustainable development, earth system sciences, fieldwork, and communication of environmental issues, giving students a solid grounding in environmental studies. In Year 1, students build on this foundation with modules covering living systems, physical environments, environmental challenges, fieldwork, and measuring and mapping environmental systems, alongside academic and personal development skills. Year 2 deepens understanding of ecology, biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem processes, earth observation, GIS, and green urban solutions, with optional modules allowing exploration of water resources or past environments, and continued research and fieldwork practice. Year 3 focuses on advanced skills and independent research, including a dissertation, applied ecology and conservation management, translating environmental science into policy and decision-making, and optional modules in areas such as earth futures, environmental public health, coasts and oceans, environmental data analysis, and geospatial applications. The program integrates lectures, seminars, laboratory work, and extensive fieldwork, preparing students for real-world environmental problem-solving and careers in conservation, policy, consultancy, or research. It emphasizes hands-on experience, professional development, and practical application of knowledge to address local and global environmental challenges.
