COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Sociology (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive understanding of society, crime, and social research. The Foundation Year introduces students to key concepts, including crime and society, sociological imagination, politics, and social research skills, while encouraging critical thinking and academic development. Year 1 builds on this foundation with core modules exploring the causes and explanations of crime, the criminal justice system, social problems, and sociological perspectives, alongside practical research experience. In Year 2, students engage with both core and optional modules, allowing them to focus on contemporary issues in criminality, youth and deviance, drugs and society, crime and media, social theory, and research skills. Optional modules and study abroad opportunities provide scope for specialization and global perspectives. Year 3 emphasizes advanced study and independent research, offering a range of optional modules such as contemporary policing, mentally disordered offenders, crime and technology, social harm, gender-based violence, migration and justice, and wellbeing. Students can undertake dissertations or work experience projects to apply their knowledge in practical contexts. Across all years, the program develops critical thinking, research competence, and an understanding of social structures, preparing graduates for careers in criminology, social research, policy, and related fields while fostering informed engagement with contemporary social issues.
