COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in computing theory, practical skills, and professional competence. The foundation year introduces core concepts including personal, academic, and skills development, digital technologies, information systems, coding basics, physical computing, and digital society, providing a solid base for advanced study. In the first year, students build on this foundation through modules in AI fundamentals, computational thinking, computing fundamentals, data fundamentals, programming, and computers and society, with optional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year expands technical knowledge with advanced programming, algorithms and data structures, human-computer interaction, and a range of optional modules such as software architecture, computer vision, digital forensics, data visualization, app development, and consultancy projects, allowing students to tailor their learning. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including data security and governance, computing group and individual projects, with optional modules in cloud computing, big data, machine learning, business intelligence, robotics, and experimental design for interactive applications. Across all years, the program emphasizes problem-solving, analytical thinking, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in software development, cybersecurity, data science, AI, and other technology-driven roles, while equipping them with the skills to address complex challenges in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
