COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood and Early Years Studies (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University begins with a foundation year designed to introduce students to professional skills, collaborative working, human development, study techniques, and valuing self and others, providing a strong base for further study. In the first year, students explore core aspects of childhood, including child development, children’s voices, family and schooling contexts, social policy, approaches to learning, and perspectives on childhood and youth, with additional support in academic language skills for international and EU students. The second year expands this understanding through modules on young people in society, global perspectives on childhood, play and early years curriculum, social and emotional wellbeing, professional practice, inclusive practice, substance use, promoting health, and research skills. Students are able to tailor their learning with optional modules that deepen knowledge in specific areas. In the final year, students complete a major research project in childhood and early years studies, while also studying leadership and collaboration in children’s services, young children as meaning makers, changing childhoods, and perspectives on children’s literature. Across all years, the program integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience, preparing graduates for professional careers in education, social work, children’s services, or further study, while fostering critical thinking, reflection, and evidence-based practice.
