COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program is structured to build a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and practical skills across four years. The foundation year introduces essential concepts in biology, chemistry, scientific communication, and digital literacy, while developing key laboratory and numeracy skills. In Year 1, students deepen their understanding through modules in analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology, genetics, and biological and medicinal chemistry, alongside practical and professional skills training. Year 2 advances this knowledge with more specialised topics such as molecular biology, human metabolism, bioinformatics, organic chemistry, and analytical methods, helping students develop strong research and analytical abilities. In the final year, students focus on advanced areas of biochemistry, including current topics, natural product and medicinal chemistry, and advanced analytical techniques, while also having the option to study genomics or industrial biochemistry. A major research project forms a key part of this year, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real scientific investigations. Throughout the program, students gain a balance of theoretical understanding and hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and other scientific industries.
