COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria University provides a comprehensive and practical approach to understanding human performance, health, and wellbeing. In the first year, students develop core academic and professional skills, and foundational knowledge in psychology, anatomy, biomechanics, human physiology, exercise energetics, and research methods, while international and EU students receive additional academic language support. The second year builds on these skills with advanced research design, performance and health assessment, and professional development, alongside optional modules such as extreme physiology, applied nutrition, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, sport management, and study abroad opportunities. This combination allows students to gain practical experience and a global perspective on sport and exercise science. The final year focuses on applying theoretical and practical knowledge through a major undergraduate project and modules in exercise and health intervention strategies, while offering optional specialised areas including paediatric exercise science, human movement science, psychological skills training, sports medicine and rehabilitation, talent identification, high-performance sport, coaching, event management, business, and career development. Across all years, the program integrates research, applied practice, and professional development, equipping students with analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in sport, exercise, health, fitness, coaching, rehabilitation, performance analysis, and related fields, or for further postgraduate study in applied sports science and health-related disciplines.
