COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Social Work degree at Northumbria University is structured to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and professional competence across three progressive years. In the first year, students are introduced to the social work profession, exploring the fundamentals of social work intervention, community engagement, social policy, and law, alongside sociological and psychological perspectives. Core academic skills and critical reflection are also embedded to support effective learning. The second year focuses on applying theoretical knowledge in practice, with a substantial first placement providing hands-on experience, complemented by modules in social work assessment and intervention, law and ethics, risk and resilience, and research for practice, all designed to enhance practical decision-making and professional judgment. In the final year, students consolidate their expertise through advanced practice modules that address complex social work scenarios, rights-based approaches, and safeguarding practice, while undertaking a critical research project that develops analytical and evidence-based skills. Across the program, students engage with real-world contexts and professional standards, preparing them to meet the requirements for registration with Social Work England. By the end of the degree, graduates are equipped to work confidently in diverse social work settings, making meaningful contributions to individuals, families, and communities while demonstrating professional competence, ethical awareness, and reflective practice.
