COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured over three years to develop a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour, thought, and mental health. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge in psychology through core modules such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Research Methodologies, Personality and Health Psychology, and An Introduction to Mental Health, alongside practical laboratory experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Academic language support is provided for international students. Year 2 builds on this foundation with advanced core modules in experimental methods, psychobiology, cognition, individual differences, and social and developmental psychology, while offering a wide range of optional modules such as positive psychology, business psychology, investigative psychology, leadership, sleep and health, and study abroad opportunities. This allows students to tailor their degree to their interests and career goals while gaining hands-on research experience and professional skills through placements. In Year 3, students complete core modules in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Science, the Psychology Project, and Mental Health Problems: Evaluating and Synthesizing Evidence, while optional modules allow further specialization in areas such as organisational psychology, health psychology, consumer psychology, digital health, and sport performance. The program integrates theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory skills, and research experience, equipping students with the expertise required for professional practice or postgraduate study in psychology.
