COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a three-year program designed to develop students into skilled perioperative practitioners. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in operating department practice, including anatomy and physiology, principles of perioperative care, and evidence-based practice, while developing an understanding of patient care across surgical environments. Academic language support is available for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with a focus on applied operating department practice, pathophysiology, and evidence-informed care, alongside the development and enhancement of practical and clinical skills required in perioperative settings. Students learn to manage patient care more independently while maintaining safety and professionalism. Academic language support continues where needed. In the third year, students progress to advanced operating department practice, integrating evidence into clinical development, and focusing on leadership and management within perioperative environments. They also refine advanced clinical skills necessary for supporting complex surgical procedures. Throughout the course, students combine theoretical study with practical application, developing critical thinking, technical expertise, and professional confidence. Graduates are prepared to work effectively within multidisciplinary surgical teams, delivering safe, high-quality patient care across all stages of perioperative practice and contributing to improved healthcare outcomes.
