COURSE CURRICULUM

The Occupational Therapy BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University offers a structured three-year program that develops students into competent and reflective occupational therapy professionals. In the first year, students are introduced to the role of an occupational therapist through modules on occupational science, occupational disruption, and occupations across the lifespan, alongside their first practice placement, which provides early hands-on experience. Academic language support is available for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with a second placement and modules focusing on public health, evidence-based practice, research, innovation, and the development of practical occupational therapy skills, enabling students to apply knowledge in real-world settings. Academic language support continues where required. In the final year, students deepen their understanding through community-focused practice, a third placement, and modules on professional development and lifelong learning, while completing an occupational therapy dissertation that demonstrates their research and analytical abilities. Throughout the program, students integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience, developing essential skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. The course prepares graduates to work effectively in a variety of health, social care, and community environments, supporting individuals to improve their daily lives and overall wellbeing through evidence-based occupational therapy practice.
