COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Mental Health) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a three-year program designed to develop students into skilled and accountable mental health nursing professionals. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in evidence-based practice, applied life and social sciences, and professional development, while building essential nursing skills in assessment, communication, and clinical interventions. Academic language support is also provided for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation by focusing on psychosocial approaches, complex mental health care, and shared decision-making, alongside the development of evidence-based and advanced clinical skills, enabling students to manage more challenging and diverse care situations. Academic language support continues where required. In the third year, students transition into accountable practitioners, with a strong emphasis on leadership, teamwork, quality improvement, and advanced nursing skills aimed at enhancing patient safety and care outcomes. Across all three years, the program integrates theoretical learning with practical experience through clinical placements, fostering critical thinking, professional judgment, and reflective practice. Graduates are equipped to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective mental health care, demonstrate clinical competence, and contribute meaningfully to multidisciplinary teams while addressing the complex mental health needs of individuals, families, and communities.
