COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Child) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a three-year program designed to develop students into competent, compassionate, and accountable practitioners in child and young people’s nursing. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in children and young people’s health and illness, applied life and social sciences, and professional practice, while developing essential nursing skills in assessment, communication, and interventions. Academic language support is provided for international and EU students to ensure full engagement with the curriculum. The second year focuses on psychosocial approaches, complex care management, and shared decision-making, while enhancing evidence-based practice and clinical skills to prepare students for more challenging care scenarios. This year integrates theoretical learning with practical experience, ensuring students can apply knowledge effectively in clinical settings. In the third year, students transition to accountable practitioners, focusing on leadership, quality improvement, teamwork, and advanced nursing skills aimed at improving safety and care quality. Across all three years, the program combines academic study with hands-on learning, fostering critical thinking, professional judgment, and reflective practice. Graduates are equipped to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care, demonstrate clinical and professional competence, and contribute meaningfully to healthcare teams and the wellbeing of children, young people, and their families in diverse clinical environments.
