COURSE CURRICULUM

The Midwifery Studies BSc (Hons) program provides a structured progression from foundational knowledge to advanced professional practice, preparing students for careers as registered midwives. In the first year, students establish a strong base with modules focused on the professional role of the midwife, universal midwifery care for women and families, continuity of care, additional midwifery care, and foundations of skilled midwifery practice, supported by academic language modules for international and EU students. This stage develops essential knowledge, practical skills, and the ability to approach midwifery with critical thinking and scholarly awareness. In the second year, students advance their understanding through modules that focus on developing as a professional midwife, provision of universal care, leadership and collaboration in continuity of care, managing additional midwifery needs, and developing skilled midwifery practice. These modules integrate practical experience with theoretical learning, enhancing confidence and competence in professional settings. In the final year, students consolidate their skills and knowledge through advanced modules that emphasize professional scholarship, appraisal of universal care, integration and coordination of additional midwifery care, and proficient midwifery practice. This progression ensures graduates are highly skilled, clinically competent, and confident, equipped to lead midwifery care, make informed professional decisions, and meet the standards required for professional registration and practice in diverse healthcare settings.
