COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to provide a comprehensive education in forensic science, combining theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development across three years. In Year 1, students build a solid foundation with modules in practical forensic science, processes and practices, analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology and genetics, and scientific support, while international and EU students can develop academic language skills. This year focuses on developing essential laboratory techniques, scientific reasoning, and an understanding of fundamental forensic principles. Year 2 advances students’ expertise with modules in research methods, trace analysis, body fluids and blood pattern analysis, drugs and toxicology, DNA profiling, and specialist applications in criminal investigation, allowing students to apply scientific methods to realistic forensic scenarios and develop critical investigative skills. Year 3 consolidates learning through a forensic science research project and modules in complex casework and advanced forensic investigation, with optional study in contemporary issues, advanced analytical chemistry, forensic biology, and languages. The program emphasizes hands-on laboratory experience, analytical thinking, and problem-solving, preparing students to evaluate, interpret, and communicate scientific evidence accurately. Graduates leave the course equipped with the knowledge, technical expertise, and professional judgment required for careers in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related scientific and legal fields.
