COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Forensic Science BSc (Hons) program is structured over three years, combining core modules with a range of optional subjects to provide a comprehensive understanding of both forensic science and criminology. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge and skills, covering practical forensic techniques, the processes and practices used in forensic science, and the fundamentals of biology and chemistry. The criminology focus includes modules on explaining crime, crime myths versus realities, and an introduction to the criminal justice system, while international and EU students may also undertake academic language skills for applied sciences. In the second year, students build on this foundation with specialized forensic modules such as body fluids and blood pattern analysis, DNA profiling, and drugs and toxicology, alongside criminology modules exploring theories, concepts, and perspectives, as well as the criminal justice system. Optional modules such as sex work and the social impact of drugs allow students to tailor their studies. The final year emphasizes advanced application, with core modules in complex casework, advanced forensic investigation, and a substantial interdisciplinary dissertation. Students can also choose from a variety of optional modules addressing contemporary issues in criminology and policing, including extreme violence, crimes of the powerful, technological surveillance, and social harm, allowing for a personalized and in-depth exploration of their interests while preparing for professional or academic careers.
