COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a three-year program designed to provide students with a solid foundation in computing theory, practical skills, and professional development. In the first year, students study core modules including AI fundamentals, computational thinking, computing fundamentals, programming, data fundamentals, and computers and society, with academic language support available for international and EU students. This establishes a strong basis in both technical and analytical skills while exploring the societal impacts of computing. The second year builds on this knowledge with core modules in advanced programming, algorithms and data structures, and human-computer interaction, alongside a wide selection of optional modules such as software architecture, computer vision, digital forensics, data visualization, mobile and web app development, IT service management, and computing consultancy projects. Students can also engage in professional practice opportunities, including internships and group consultancy projects. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including data security and governance, computing group and individual projects, and optional modules in machine learning, cloud computing, big data, business intelligence, robotics, and contemporary software development methods. Throughout the program, students develop problem-solving, programming, analytical, and project management skills, preparing them for careers in software development, cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence, and other technology-driven industries.
