COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) program at Northumbria University is a comprehensive four-year course that combines theoretical learning with practical experience to prepare students for professional careers in civil engineering. In the first year, students develop a foundation in core subjects such as design and materials, land surveying, mechanics and structures, fluid and soil mechanics, structural design, and engineering analytics, with optional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year expands technical knowledge through construction project management with BIM, engineering geology and geotechnics, structural analysis and design, hydraulics and hydrology, and further mathematics, alongside preparation for professional placements. In the third year, students have the option to undertake a full-year work placement or study abroad, providing practical experience and international exposure to real-world engineering practice. The final year focuses on advanced civil engineering topics, including environmental and geotechnical engineering, structural analysis and modelling, an integrated group design project, and a substantial civil engineering research project, while continuing academic language support for those who need it. Throughout the program, students develop problem-solving, analytical, design, and project management skills, integrating theory with practical application. Graduates are equipped to contribute to sustainable infrastructure development, manage complex engineering projects, and address diverse challenges in civil engineering locally and globally.
