COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering (Extended Degree) BEng (Hons) program provides a comprehensive pathway from foundational engineering knowledge to advanced practice, combining technical study, professional development, and opportunities for global and practical experience. The foundation year equips students with essential skills in engineering principles, analytical problem-solving, engineering systems, foundational engineering approaches, and mathematical methods, preparing them for undergraduate study. In the first year, students advance their understanding through core modules in engineering analytics, materials and manufacturing, applied engineering approaches, statics and dynamics, and thermodynamics, with academic language support available for international and EU students. The second year focuses on developing practical and design skills with modules in mechanics and finite element analysis, mechanical engineering design, integrative engineering approaches, fluids and energy, and engineering project management, alongside optional preparation for work placements. In the third year, students can gain hands-on experience through a full-year work placement or a study abroad year, enhancing professional skills and global perspective. The final year combines core modules in professional engineering futures and vibration and control with optional advanced topics such as mechanics of continuous systems, sustainable energy systems, automation and mechatronics, and global design challenges. A substantial investigative project allows students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. This program equips graduates with the technical expertise, practical experience, and professional skills needed for engineering roles and career progression, while understanding ethical, sustainable, and societal considerations.
