COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering (Extended Degree) BEng (Hons) at Northumbria University is designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in civil engineering principles, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The foundation year introduces core concepts including engineering principles, analytical problem-solving, engineering systems, and mathematical methods, establishing a strong base for advanced study. In the first year, students develop their understanding of design and materials, land surveying, mechanics and structures, fluid and soil mechanics, structural design, and engineering analytics, with optional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year expands technical knowledge through construction project management with BIM, engineering geology and geotechnics, structural analysis and design, hydraulics and hydrology, further mathematics, and preparation for placement opportunities. In the third year, students have the option to undertake a work placement or study abroad year, providing professional experience and international exposure. The final year focuses on advanced civil engineering topics including environmental and geotechnical engineering, structural analysis and modelling, an integrated group design project, and a substantial civil engineering research project. Across all years, the program emphasizes problem-solving, design, project management, and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in civil engineering, infrastructure development, and sustainable construction, with the knowledge and experience to address complex engineering challenges.
