COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering (Extended Degree) BEng (Hons) program provides a structured pathway from foundational knowledge to advanced engineering practice, combining theoretical study, practical application, and professional development. The foundation year introduces core engineering principles, analytical problem-solving, engineering systems, foundational engineering approaches, and mathematical methods, preparing students for undergraduate study. In the first year, students build on this foundation with modules in engineering analytics, materials and manufacturing, applied engineering approaches, statics and dynamics, and thermodynamics, alongside academic language support for international and EU students. The second year develops advanced engineering skills through modules including mechanics and finite element analysis, mechanical engineering design, integrative engineering approaches, fluids and energy, and engineering project management, with optional preparation for placement and continued language support. The third year emphasizes professional and practical experience, with core modules in professional engineering futures, vibration and control, and a substantial investigative project. Students can also choose optional modules in mechanics of continuous systems, sustainable energy systems, automation and mechatronics, and global design challenges to specialise in areas of interest. This combination of technical knowledge, applied practice, and professional development ensures graduates are equipped to meet industry standards, pursue Chartered Engineer registration, and take on roles in design, analysis, manufacturing, automation, energy, and engineering management, while understanding the social, ethical, and sustainable context of their work.
