COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering (Extended Degree) BEng (Hons) at Northumbria University is structured to provide a comprehensive education over a foundation year and three subsequent years, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The foundation year introduces students to core engineering principles, problem-solving techniques, engineering systems, and mathematical methods, providing a strong base for advanced study. In the first year, students explore design and materials, land surveying, mechanics and structures, fluid and soil mechanics, structural design, and engineering analytics, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this knowledge through modules in construction project management with BIM, engineering geology and geotechnics, structural analysis and design, hydraulics and hydrology, further mathematics, and preparation for placement opportunities. In the final year, students deepen their expertise with environmental and geotechnical engineering, structural analysis and modelling, an integrated group design project, and a substantial civil engineering research project, while continuing to have academic language support where needed. Across all years, the program emphasizes problem-solving, design, project management, and analytical skills, preparing students to address complex engineering challenges. Graduates gain the technical knowledge, practical experience, and professional awareness necessary to contribute effectively to infrastructure development, sustainable construction, and the broader field of civil engineering.
