COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) program at Northumbria University is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills over three years. In the first year, students study core subjects including design and materials, land surveying, mechanics and structures, fluid and soil mechanics, structural design, and engineering analytics, with academic language support available for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in construction project management using BIM, engineering geology and geotechnics, structural analysis and design, hydraulics and hydrology, and further mathematics, alongside preparation for professional placement opportunities. In the final year, students deepen their expertise with environmental and geotechnical engineering, structural analysis and modelling, an integrated group design project, and a substantial civil engineering research project, while continuing to have academic language support if required. Across all three years, the program emphasizes problem-solving, analytical thinking, design, and project management, integrating practical and theoretical learning. Students gain experience applying their knowledge to real-world engineering challenges and develop the skills necessary to design, construct, and maintain sustainable infrastructure. Graduates leave the program well-prepared for careers in civil engineering, infrastructure development, and related fields, with the technical expertise and professional awareness needed to address complex engineering problems responsibly and effectively.
