COURSE CURRICULUM

The Theatre and Performance BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program that combines practical performance, critical study, and professional development to prepare students for careers in theatre and the creative industries. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts through core modules covering big ideas in theatre and performance, practical performance encounters, performance explorations, and urgent contemporary issues, with academic language support provided for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation with core modules in arguments for theatre, contemporary theatre-making, applied theatre practice, investigating theatre, and performance in urban contexts, while optional modules in digital performance and performer training allow students to enhance their creative and technical skills. Academic language support continues for international and EU students. The third year offers optional opportunities for real-world experience through a full-year work placement or study abroad, enabling students to apply their learning in professional or international settings. In the final year, students consolidate their knowledge and practical skills through a performance dissertation and a major performance project, alongside a core module on performance and creative economies. Optional modules in future performer training, popular performance, and performance and the politics of fear allow students to tailor their learning. The program integrates practical work, research, and critical reflection, equipping students with creativity, versatility, and professional expertise to succeed as theatre practitioners and creative leaders.
