COURSE CURRICULUM

The Interior Design BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to equip students with creative, technical, and professional skills for careers in interior design across a wide range of spaces, including commercial, cultural, lifestyle, and wellbeing-focused environments. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules on experimental processes, discovering interior design, responding to context, architectural technologies and alternative materials, and introductory design contexts, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year builds on this foundation by addressing emerging design issues, strategies and tactics for interior design, wellbeing-focused spaces, branded commercial environments, and contextual investigation, integrating conceptual thinking with technical understanding. The third year offers optional professional and international experiences through creative studios, design placements, or study abroad opportunities, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world and global contexts while enhancing practical and professional skills. In the final year, students focus on advanced interior design challenges through modules on contemporary design futures, speculative design, business and commercial strategies, advanced commercial interior design, and research practice, culminating in professional-level portfolios and design solutions. Across all four years, the program emphasizes studio-based learning, continuous feedback, formative reviews, and peer-learning, helping students develop creativity, critical thinking, technical proficiency, and industry-ready expertise to pursue successful careers in interior design.
