COURSE CURRICULUM

The History BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of global and British history while developing research, analytical, and communication skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules covering contemporary Europe, US history, late medieval and early modern Europe, global histories of power and ideology, modern British history, and historical methods, with additional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year combines core study in historical debate with a wide range of optional modules, allowing students to explore topics such as the Holocaust, European conflicts, revolutionary France, US political history, British immigration and multiculturalism, early modern monarchies, and contemporary legacies of conflict. Students also have the opportunity for independent research projects or a study abroad experience. The third year focuses on experiential learning, offering full-year options for work placements or study abroad to gain practical experience and international perspectives. In the final year, students engage in advanced study through optional modules and extended research projects, including a history dissertation or public history dissertation, covering areas such as American history, civil rights, Italian fascism, early modern Europe, environmental issues, global politics, and urban life. The program emphasizes flexibility, critical thinking, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in research, education, public service, cultural institutions, and beyond.
