COURSE CURRICULUM

The Guidance and Counselling BA (Hons) course is structured over four years, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for careers in helping professions. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation by exploring counselling perspectives, academic research, and the social factors that influence individuals, while developing essential helping skills and understanding professional contexts. Year 2 focuses on applying these skills in practice, with modules covering mentoring, the skilled helper approach, group counselling, and career development, alongside research in practice. Students can also choose optional modules such as creative helping practices or professional practice to tailor their learning. Year 3 offers valuable real-world and international experience through optional work placements or study abroad opportunities, either as a full year or a semester, allowing students to gain practical insight and enhance employability. In Year 4, students complete a major project and study advanced topics including career guidance models, working with older clients, and different counselling approaches such as brief and narrative methods. Academic language support is available throughout for international students. Overall, the course develops strong interpersonal, analytical, and professional skills, preparing graduates for roles in education, community services, and career guidance, as well as further professional training.
