COURSE CURRICULUM

The Furniture and Product Design BA (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program that develops creative, technical, and professional design skills through a combination of theory, practice, and real-world experience. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation by studying design cultures and theory while developing practical studio skills through hands-on projects and experimental processes, with academic language support available for international and EU students. Year 2 advances students’ abilities in 3D design, focusing on making, CAD and communication, project development, and understanding design context, alongside exploring emerging issues and practices in the field. Year 3 offers flexibility, allowing students to choose between creative studio work, professional design placements, or study abroad opportunities, providing valuable industry experience or international exposure. In Year 4, students consolidate their learning through professional design practice, a major design project, critical design evaluation, and exploration of contemporary challenges and future design directions. Throughout the course, students engage in studio-based learning, develop problem-solving and creative thinking skills, and gain an understanding of industry practices. The program prepares graduates for careers in furniture and product design, as well as broader roles within the creative industries, equipping them with the skills and confidence to succeed in professional design environments.
