COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature BA (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a comprehensive program that develops both literary knowledge and practical skills over four years. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as Introduction to Literary Studies, Reading Poetry, Talking Texts, Gothic Stories, Representing the US: From Slavery to Terrorism, and Concepts in Criticism and Culture, alongside an optional academic language support module for international and EU students. Year 2 deepens literary study with core modules including Early Modern Cultures, Modernism and Modernity, and Literary Revolutions, while offering a variety of optional modules such as Tragedy, Literature and Adaptation, Historical Fiction, Literature in the Museum, Bad Education, and opportunities for student tutoring or study abroad, allowing students to gain broader cultural and professional experiences. Year 3 offers further flexibility with an optional Humanities Work Placement or Study Abroad year, enabling students to apply their knowledge in practical or international contexts. In Year 4, students consolidate their learning through a core English Dissertation and can specialise via a wide range of optional modules, including Gothic Sexualities, Marlowe in Context, Shakespeare, Romanticism, Victorian fiction, contemporary literature, environmental writing, Staging Early Modern Gender, and Audio Storytelling. The program equips students with critical analysis, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in literature, education, culture, and related fields.
